Project overview

A climate-responsive residence shaped by shade, arrival, and shared life above the city.

Ma’a Sue Residences brings six homes together within a compact mixed-use building in Yaoundé’s institutional district. Two articulated volumes, deep balconies, vertical fins, and protected openings temper direct sun and rain while encouraging daylight and natural cross-ventilation.

A triple-height lobby anchors the arrival sequence, drawing light into the building and connecting the ground floor to the residential levels above. At roof level, a pool, fitness room, and flexible gathering space create a shared landscape overlooking the city.

Context

An established urban setting within Yaoundé’s institutional district.

Located near the Presidential Palace, Ma’a Sue Residences is surrounded by major national institutions, including Cameroon Radio Television, the headquarters of the Société Nationale des Hydrocarbures, and the Conseil Économique et Social.

Embassies, diplomatic missions, and administrative centers are concentrated nearby, placing the residences within a well-connected part of the capital.

Architecture

Two volumes organize a sequence of shade, light, and arrival.

The principal residential entrance opens between the two volumes into a triple-height lobby. This generous room brings natural light deep into the building and establishes a visual relationship between the ground floor and the residences above.

The rear volume is raised above on-grade parking, allowing the compact site to work efficiently while preserving openness at ground level. Deep balconies, slab overhangs, and vertical fins create strong shadow lines, protect the glazing from direct solar exposure, and give the building its sculptural expression.

Shared life

Common spaces extend daily life beyond the individual apartments.

The rooftop terrace brings together a swimming pool, fitness room, and flexible multipurpose areas for exercise, relaxation, and informal gathering. Broad views across Yaoundé give these shared spaces a distinct relationship to the city.

A reception lounge and game room complement the rooftop program, creating a sequence of communal spaces from the entrance level to the top of the building.

Interiors

Warm interiors maintain a close relationship with balconies and terraces.

Living, dining, and kitchen areas flow naturally into one another, creating generous interiors that feel open while retaining the identity of each space. Integrated lighting, carefully selected finishes, and custom cabinetry establish a consistent material character throughout the residences.

The kitchens are conceived as both practical workspaces and social rooms. Integrated appliances, generous counters, and carefully planned storage support everyday use while keeping the kitchen connected to the wider domestic experience.
